Fire door installation
New doorsets, measured digitally, made to the opening and certified on completion. For new work and refurbishments across Sydney, to a program you can plan around.
The doors are the last thing in and the first thing queried
Fire doors turn up at the end of a build, when the openings are whatever the previous trades left them, and they’re one of the first things a certifier asks about. An opening that’s out of square, a frame that’s gone in wrong, or hardware chosen because it was on the shelf — each one turns into a question you have to answer at handover rather than a door you can forget about.
We’d rather be measuring your openings early than explaining them late.
Measured, made, fitted
STEP 1
We template the opening digitally
A Prodim Proliner produces an exact drawing of the opening as built, not as drawn.
STEP 2
The doorset is made to that drawing
It arrives the size of your opening.
STEP 3
Fitted, tagged, certified
A short install, and the door leaves with its tag and its certificate.
Openings are rarely the size the drawing says, even in new work. Measure with a tape and you’ll be trimming on site to make it fit — and a fire door can only be trimmed about 3 mm before it stops matching the system it was tested under. Templating the opening digitally means the door is made to the hole as it actually is, so nothing has to be shaved to make the program work.
What an installation includes
- The site measure and the digital template
- The doorset — leaf and frame, to the tested system the opening requires
- Hardware, supplied and installed, matched to the door’s tested system
- The compliance documentation — certificate of installation, service report and door register
How long it takes
About two weeks from template to delivery, most of the time; the install itself is short. Tell us your program early and we’ll tell you honestly whether it fits.
Painting
On new work, painting is normally part of the builder’s own painting package rather than ours — most programs are set up that way, so we don’t assume it. If you’d rather it came with the doors, say so and we’ll price it.
On a replacement in an occupied building it’s different: there, painting to match existing is part of a standard job.
Fire-rated glass blocks
We do fire-rated glass block installations as well as doorsets. If your job has glazing beside or above an opening, tell us the FRL it has to achieve and we’ll tell you what we can do.
The paperwork you get
A certificate of installation as a PDF, with the service report and the door register.
On new construction you also get a paper copy, because that is what AS 1905.1 requires. It sounds like a formality until the day somebody needs it and only a file share has it.
Getting in
Access is what actually delays fire door work — not the doors. Here’s how we handle it.
STEP 1
We propose a date to the strata manager
Not to residents. The strata manager holds the relationship with the building, so the date goes to them first.
STEP 2
We prepare an attendance register
The units, in order, with times. It’s the document the whole day runs on.
STEP 3
The strata manager sends it out
They hold the resident contact details, so the notice goes out from them.
STEP 4
Residents come back to us directly
With preferences or changes. We accommodate them ahead of the day wherever we can.
We don’t hold your residents’ personal details, and we don’t ask for them, unless they’re given to us specifically so we can coordinate access. Everything else goes through the strata manager.
If we can’t get in on the day
A re-attendance fee applies — a technician and a booked slot have still been spent. We would much rather avoid charging it, which is why we push to get changes sorted before the day rather than on it. If something shifts, tell us early and we’ll do our best to work around it.
What compliance actually means here
The FRL has to match the opening, not the door you like
The required fire resistance level comes from the building, not the doorset. It’ll be in the fire engineering, the DA conditions or the schedule of essential fire safety measures. Tell us the FRL and we’ll work to it; if nobody can tell us, that’s worth resolving before anything is ordered.
The tested system
A fire door isn’t rated on its own. It’s rated as a system — leaf, frame, hardware, seals and the way it’s installed — tested together. Change one part of it and you can’t rely on the test result any more. That’s why hardware is matched to the door rather than to what fits, why backfilling is done a particular way, and why there’s a limit on trimming.
The tag
A fire doorset carries a tag identifying what it is and what it was tested to. No tag, no evidence — and a certifier has nothing to work from.
Who signs it off
Jonathan Hyde holds FPAS accreditation for Fire Safety Assessment (F049133A). Shire Fire Doors Pty Ltd is a licensed builder, 462155C.
Don’t take our word for it. FPA Australia keeps a public register of accredited practitioners and updates it as accreditations change. Search F049133A and you’ll see the measures Jonathan is accredited to assess, and whether that accreditation is current today — not just on the day this page was written.
The annual statement
In NSW, most buildings need an Annual Fire Safety Statement, and the fire doors form part of it. An installation done properly gives you the paperwork that supports it from the day the building opens.
The standards themselves are published by Standards Australia. Everything above is a plain-English summary, not a substitute for them.
For fire protection companies
Send us the door work
It comes back tagged, certified and right the first time, and the certificate goes out in your name. We don’t approach your client and we don’t put our name on your job.
And if you’re stuck on a door, just call. We give fire companies advice on doors fairly often, and we don’t charge for it.
For strata managers, owners and builders
Building something? Bring us in early
We’ll look at what you’ve actually got, tell you what needs doing and what doesn’t, and give you a price before you commit to anything.
Common questions
Can you work to our program?
Tell us the dates early and we’ll tell you honestly what we can hit. About two weeks from template to delivery is the usual, and we’d rather say no to a date than miss one.
Can you install into a new opening?
Yes — the opening still gets templated the same way. What matters is that the frame and the door are a tested system together, not two separate purchases.
Who supplies the hardware?
We do, matched to the door’s tested system. If hardware has already been bought for the job, send us what it is before it goes on — the wrong closer or latch can put the whole doorset outside what it was tested to.
Do you do fire-rated glazing?
We do fire-rated glass block installations. If there’s glazing beside or above the doorset, tell us the FRL it has to achieve and we’ll tell you whether it’s something we do.
What if we can’t get access on the day?
A re-attendance fee applies — a technician and a booked slot have still been spent. We’d much rather avoid charging it, which is why we push to get changes sorted before the day rather than on it. Tell us early and we’ll do our best to work around it.
Do you hold our residents’ contact details?
No. We propose a date to the strata manager and prepare the attendance register; they hold the resident details and send it out. Residents come back to us directly with preferences. We don’t hold personal information unless it’s given to us specifically so we can coordinate access.
What happens if the damage is worse than the defect report says?
We note what the repair actually needs and quote it for your approval. Nothing extra gets done on the day without you agreeing to it.
Can you sign off our Annual Fire Safety Statement?
Jonathan Hyde holds FPAS accreditation for Fire Safety Assessment, F049133A. Rather than take our word for it, search that number on FPA Australia’s public register — it shows the measures covered and whether the accreditation is current today.
Three ways to get an answer
A full audit
Every door inspected and recorded, standalone. You get the findings whether or not we do the remedial work.
A free inspection on one defect
If something’s been flagged and you want to know what it actually needs, we’ll come and look at that one thing at no charge.
A quote from photos or a report
Send what you’ve already got and we’ll price from it. You don’t need us on site to get a number.
Send us the drawings
Or the schedule, or just the opening sizes you think you have. We’ll tell you what it needs — and if it’s simpler than you were told, we’ll tell you that too.
